| The Bisexual's Guide to the Universe: Quips, Tips, and Lists for Those Who Go Both Ways is a tongue-in-cheek, irreverent book about bisexuality. Co-authored by Nicole Kristal and Mike Szymanski, the road signs on the cover pointing every-which-way is a humorous metaphor for the so-called "confused" bisexual who just doesn't know which way to go.
The authors point out that there are many anthologies, but they wanted to do something different. Throwing caution to the wind, Kristal and Szymanski tell what it is like to be bi with a sense of humor, and without worrying about political correctness. For example, the "Hot Dog/Sushi Dilemma is a quiz about bisexual eating habits.
Although it is a light-hearted book and fun, the book "takes back" the derogatory slurs – "fencesitters", "opportunists" and the like, much the same way that the gay community has taken back the terms "queer" and "fag" – thereby taking the power away from the stereotypes by owning and loving them.
The book is organized by complexity-levels: There are sections for beginning, intermediate and advanced bisexuals. "There is something for everybody including the bi-curious reader," says Szymanski.
The Beginner's section covers definitions and myths about bisexuality. One of the best lists in this section is called "Myths We Wish Were True," and includes such legendary beliefs as "everyone is bisexual when they're drunk' and "Bisexuals get Lots of Action."
The Intermediate Section covers pop culture: There are quotes from celebrities from A to Z on the subject of sex and bisexuals. Szymanski's many years of doing celebrity interviews provided some candid, revealing and sometimes outrageous quotes.
Also in this section, you will find advice about the advantages and disadvantages of dating straights versus the advantages of dating gays. Kristal doesn't pull any punches when she points out that one disadvantage to dating straight men is "a lot of them are boring." She also says: "By default, straight guys are the men that bi girls end up dating because they are the ones who approach you."
Szymanski points out that one advantage bi guys have when they date straight men is: "It's easier, quicker and could be relatively anonymous."
The most popular thing in the advanced section is a contract with a humorous checklist on how to monitor your bisexual partner. Some readers have actually taken this from the book and used this to successfully negotiate the terms of their relationship.
The book includes many definitions, lists, surveys and quizzes. For example, "The Hot dog / Sushi Dilemma" is a quiz about bisexual eating habits. Because quizzes and surveys are so popular with teens on My Space, this book makes a perfect gift for the questioning young person, as well as the seasoned bi-activist.
