The Nineteenth Annual Lambda Literary Awards were held on a May 31st in New York City at FIT’s Murphy Amphitheater. The awards presentation was attended by a sold-out crowd of over 300, and although there was no red carpet to walk down, it had that feel.
Lambda Literary Foundation Executive Director Charles Flowers, hosted the event with the help of the always witty Kate Clinton. The Foundation honored books in over 25 categories, with presenters announcing the finalists and the audience hanging on the edge of their seats waiting for the envelope to be opened and the winner of each category announced.
Nicole Kristal and Mike Szymanski were the winners of the first-ever Bisexual Book award. The were elated: "Nicole and I are so aware of the incredible and historic honor it is to have 'The Bisexual's Guide to the Universe' be the first winner of the first Bi category at the Lammys," said Szymanski.
At the end of the evening, the Foundation showed a 6 minute video memorializing eleven LGBT literary pioneers who have passed away during 2006, including Sarah Aldridge, Sybille Bedford, Betty Berzon, Tee Corinne, Hanns Ebensten, Aleta Fenceroy, Barbara Gittings, Sterling Houston, Art Polansky, Eric Rofes, and American Institute of Bisexuality founder, Dr. Fritz Klein.
